STRUGGLING WITH PARENTING CHALLENGES? OUR “PARENT-TO-PARENT COACHING” SERVICE MAY BE ABLE TO HELP! . . .

Adoptive and foster parents face unique challenges not common in traditional parent-child

relationships. Children coming into adoptive and foster homes often bring with them a variety

of issues connected to prior trauma. These issues include attachment challenges, grief and loss, developmental delays, and behavioral meltdowns to name just a few.

In light of these challenges, adoptive parents in particular sometimes think “We/I should be able to handle this ourselves! After all, it was us/me that made the decision to adopt in the first place.” This mindset can lead to parents isolating themselves and feeling embarrassed to reach out for help. This feeling can also be present with foster parents. Even though fostering includes the support of individuals such as caseworkers, CASA workers, behavioral aides and respite options, still, between 40 and 50 percent of foster parents “throw in the towel” within their first year of fostering.

Solid research has shown that if an adopted child can be raised by his parents into adulthood, his chances of succeeding in life are favorable. The same applies to fostering—the longer a child can stay in a stable, loving and structured home, the greater the chance for him to experience emotional healing. This is where Parent-to-Parent Coaching comes in.
